FAQ – Immigration
How long will my immigration case take?
Processing time depends on the type of case, which office is handling it and whether there are any complications. During our first meeting, we give you a realistic range based on recent experience with similar cases in San Antonio, Houston and South Texas, and we talk about what could speed things up or slow things down.
Can I fix my status if I entered without inspection?
In some situations, there may still be options through family based immigration, special petitions or waivers. In others, the law may be stricter. We look at your exact history, including how and when you entered, any prior contact with immigration officials and your family ties, before suggesting a path.
What happens if I miss my immigration court hearing?
Missing a hearing can lead to a removal order. If this has already happened, we review why the hearing was missed and whether there is a basis to ask the court to reopen the case. Acting quickly is important, especially if you live in Bexar County or another area where court dates move fast.
Will a criminal charge hurt my case?
Certain convictions and even some arrests can affect eligibility for green cards, naturalization or relief from removal. We ask about any contact with law enforcement, request records when needed and explain how those records could affect your options before you decide what to file.
Do I need a lawyer for my immigration interview?
You are allowed to attend an interview on your own, but many people feel more confident with a lawyer present and prepared. We review the file with you, talk through likely questions, discuss what to wear and what to bring so you are ready to answer clearly and honestly with a citizenship and naturalization attorney at your side when that is part of your plan.
